1. What is the major advantage of Frame Relay over ISDN?

A. Cost.

B. Ease of configuration.

C. Less overhead on the router.

D. Complete control over every device in the path.

2. What devices typically make up a Frame Relay cloud?

A. Frame Relay switches (DCEs)

B. Frame Relay switches (DTEs)

C. Frame Relay routers (DCEs)

D. Frame Relay routers (DTEs)

3. What term describes the amount of bandwidth that will be available to a frame relay provider's customer?

A. DC

B. CIR

C. BA

D. DE

E. BE

F. DE

4. What value serves as a keepalive for frame relay circuits?

A. FECN

B. LMI

C. BECN

D. ANSI

E. DE

F. Cisco

G. CIR

H. DLCI

5. You run "show interface serial0" on a router. Which of the following console outputs indicates a possible LMI mismatch?

A. Serial0 is up, line protocol is up.

B. Serial0 is administratively down, line protocol is down.

C. Serial0 is down, line protocol is down.

D. Serial0 is up, line protocol is down.

E. Serial0 is up, line protocol is administratively down.

6. What are the frame relay LMI types?

B. cisco

C. hdlc

D. ansi

E. dot1q

F. q933a

G. isl

H. dlci

7. Choose the statements that accurately describe LMI Autosense.

A. The DTE sends three LMI messages, and the DCE responds with one.

B. The DCE sends three LMI messages, and the DTE responds with one.

C. Once the LMI type is discovered, it must be hard-coded into the DTE configuration.

D. LMI autosense does not require the discovered LMI type to be configured into the config of the DTE or the DCE.

8. Which statements are true of frame relay LMI?

A. Cisco is the default LMI type.

B. Ansi is the default LMI type.

C. Dot1q is the default LMI type.

D. The LMI must be agreed upon by the DTE and a DCE.

E. The LMI type must be agreed upon between the two DTEs involved in the communication.

9. Identify the frame relay encapsulation options.

A. IETF (the default)

B. IETF

C. Cisco (the default)

D. Cisco

E. LMI

F. DOT1q

G. ANSI

H. Q933A

10. Identify the two devices that must agree on the frame relay encapsulation type.

A. Both DTEs.

B. All DCEs.

C. The DTE and the DCE closest to the DTE.

D. None of these.

Here are the answers!

1. A - The major advantage of Frame Relay over ISDN - it's cheaper.

2. A - A frame relay cloud consists of frame relay switches, which are DCEs (Data Communications Equipment).

3. B - The CIR (Committed Information Rate) is the minimum amount of bandwidth the frame relay provider guarantees to his customer.

4. B - The Local Management Interface (LMI) is the keepalive for a frame relay circuit. When a certain number of LMIs are missed, the circuit will be unusable.

5. D - Whenever you see "serial0 is up, line protocol is down", this means that the interface is physically fine, but there is a logical problem (usually with keepalives). Since frame relay is running here, the LMI is most likely the problem.

6. B, D, F - Cisco, ansi, and q933a are the LMI types. Cisco is the default. The LMI type Cisco is Cisco-proprietary, and it's recommended that in an all-Cisco environment, you use this LMI type.

7. A, D - LMI Autosense Operation: The DTE will send three LMI messages, one of each type. The DCE responds with an LMI message of the LMI type it's running. The DTE then dynamically adapts to this LMI type and will only send that LMI type from that point on.

8. A, D - "cisco" is the default LMI type, and this LMI type must be agreed upon between the DTE and the neighboring DCE.

9. B, C - The encapsulation options are cisco and ietf, and cisco is the default.

10. A - The DTEs at the two ends of the communication must agree on the frame relay encapsulation type. The DCEs do not care what encap type is used.
